In Home

When hosting an event, you are not only a host but also the planner and organizer, the decorator, the chef or caterer, and the after-party cleaner. It can be easy to get overwhelmed or feel lost if you have not hosted before but breaking down what hosting entails can be a helpful guide to minimize stress and provide clarity on what is important to focus on. Hosting is a full job to take on but is so rewarding when done right!

  1. Plan and plan thoroughly.

All gatherings and events take planning. From the guestlist and location to the bites and entertainment, the details need to be carefully considered in correlation to your gathering before finalizing. Planning anything helps to keep mishaps and forgotten items at a minimum. Start with your guest list, any food and beverages needed, activities if there are any, and then location and decorations if applicable. Make a to-do list, and a vision board if you are a visual person, and check off items as you go!

  1. Consider your audience and event

Keep in mind the expectations and personalities of your guests. A great example of this is you wouldn’t hire a kid’s birthday clown for an adult book club reading a serious novel. A silly example, yes, but showcases the point. All aspects of your gathering should be a reflection of the guests attending and the overall vibe of your event.

  1. Choose an appropriate location

Whether it’s your home, a public place, or a private venue, the location of any gathering should also reflect the guests and the reason for gathering. If it’s a Superbowl watch party, your home is a fine setting for sitting, snacking, and conversing, since your guests are most likely family or close friends. If it is a Galentine’s gathering, a restaurant with live music is also a great option for food, drinks, singing, and dancing. When thinking of hosting, most people assume it being at their home, but this does not have to be the case.

  1. Anticipate the needs of guests

Of course, there are some things you cannot anticipate, but once you know your guest list and those who compile it, you can get a good gauge on some of the general or specific needs your guests may have. For example, dietary restrictions are a major consideration if any of your attendees have them. Having a specialized food option for them is something a great host, and friend, does. A simple and more general recommendation for this tip is to have your bathroom clean and stocked for your guests to feel comfortable in your home. Being able to anticipate what people may need and being prepared will ensure your gathering goes smoothly and your guests feel welcomed and cared for.
